On the day before he died, I played Natalie merchant's "Golden Bells." I sang along with the song even though I am not one to sing in front of a lot of people. That last night of his life, Grandma and I stayed with him...early the day he died, I went to take a shower while Grandma sat with him. When it was grandma's turn to shower, I stayed with Dad, closed the door and put Natalie Merchant's CD on again. This time I played her song "Thank You." I sang along with Natalie and Dad looked so peaceful....There were a lot of emotions in the air...I often think it was because we were all scared that our beloved Dad was going away.... Thank you Mari for your beautiful and soulful essay....Lupe.

Silvia - Thank you for sharing about your time with grandpa. I've always wondered what those weeks were like for you and everyone else who stayed with him up to the end. You've done fine keeping everyone together -- it's just hard with everyone growing up, changing, and dealing with the responsibilities within their own families. I still see a lot of concern and support among family members, even if we're physically apart. Just check out all our interactions on Facebook. :)

Thanks, "EZ"!

Love ya both!

My Dearest Marie,
As I read your story it brought back all the memories of those days. After every one was gone and Grandpa was transfer to the VA Hopsice unit, I sat by him day in and day out.. talking, watching him, he sang, he laughed and he worried... I couldn't believe I was watching my Dad dying, but in his last weeks he did not look like he was going to leave us anytime soon. I will never trade those meoments that I spent with him alone and even though sometimes we did not speak, just being there with him was all I could ask for..
He was the one the held the family together and unforunately the family has not been together in a very long time and I think he would be so disappointed. I promised him I would keep the family together but I think it is a battled I have lost. He will always be in our hearts and minds....
Thank you my dear niece for writing this beautiful story.. I love you very much..

A story that hit home with a sadder ending. Work well done Maria! Sometimes it takes a tragedy to not make the same mistakes others may of done. :-)
