The Octavia E. Butler Memorial Scholarship Fund

I LOVE OCTAVIA BUTLER. I love her, her writing, her essays. Her books meant a lot to me, as a teen and young adult and especially as someone who is multi-ethnic, enjoys SF, and great writing. If you don’t know who she is, just go straight to your library and check out one of her books. Any of them. They are all superb!

I’m saddened to know that I will never be able to take one of her workshops and that I might never be able to make it to Clarion West. But it’s a fantastic scholarship and program, which you can tell by the quality writers they turn out (Rachel Swirsky, Shweta Narayan, Ann Leckie, Vylar Kaftan, Rochita Loenen-Ruiz).

Even though I’m jealous ;) please try to help a writer-of-color make it to the next Clarion workshop. There are two ways you can help:

(1) The Carl Brandon Society is holding a prize drawing of five eReaders starting on November 5th and ending November 22nd, 2010. The funds raised will benefit the Octavia E. Butler Memorial Scholarship, a fund that sends two emerging writers of color to the Clarion writers workshops annually.

For $1, you can buy a ticket that will enter you into a contest to win one of two available Barnes & Noble Nooks, one of two available Kobo Readers (with Wi-Fi), and one Alex eReader by Spring Design!!!! Buy more than one ticket, dudes and dudettes!

In addition, each eReader will come pre-loaded with books, short stories, poems and essays by writers of color from the speculative fiction field. Some of the writers include N. K. Jemisin, Nisi Shawl, Alaya Dawn Johnson, Terence Taylor, Ted Chiang, Shweta Narayan, Chesya Burke, Moondancer Drake, Saladin Ahmed, Rochita Loenen-Ruiz, and there will be many more. (2) If you don’t want to enter to win an ebook, you can still donate here via PayPal: Octavia E. Butler Memorial Scholarship Fund

I’m making my donation later today!
