Bestiary: the Best of the Inaugural Demi-Decade of A cappella Zoo was recently reviewed –and look! There’s a very nice mention of Robert Sullivan’s story “Popper’s Choice. I work with Robert: Hooray Robert! Plus, I also have a story in Bestiary. Double hooray!

There are more positive and enthusiatic reviews encouraging you to buy this issue at The Future Fire, Brain Ripples, and Sabotage Reviews.

In other writing and personal news, I submitted a story today. Submitting a story isn’t amazing or anything but I hadn’t done so since 2011. I can’t believe how much time I went without writing, so sending in my story this morning seemed like a Big Deal. But that was my only story, which means it’s time to write other stories and get back into the crazy cycle of story submissions, acceptances, and rejections. Thank goodness for Duotrope.

The Secret Life of Writing http://www.mariadeira.com/2013/06/the-secret-life-of-writing/ Wed, 26 Jun 2013 05:09:10 +0000 http://www.mariadeira.com/?p=1455 I’m about to go crazy with words. Spending more time writing means less time for blog updates (other than those related to publication, submissions, and the Friday/Saturday Five — and maybe occasional posts related to home & garden and health). I’m also minimizing time spent on email, social networking, and Abba-Zabas.

Happy trails to you.

I might be a little biased, but I think anyone who reads my sister’s blog will find themselves entertained and inspired. Over a year ago, Antonia really did quit her job and, along with her boyfriend, made the move to Guam. Since then, she’s had to adjust to island life — a new way of living for someone who’s spent most of her time in Eastern Oregon and Idaho. She’s also had the opportunity during her time in Guam to travel to Japan and the Philippines. And I’m sure she’s not stopping there.

Part adventure journal, part guide for folks potentially moving to Guam, she covers a variety of topics, from discovering great hiking trails and exotic wildlife to the problems of dumping and littering and the high cost of living on an island. Each post contains beautiful, fun, and thoughtful photos to accompany her essays. If you enjoy good travel writing, want to learn about Guam, or just want to see photos of a lovely young woman living it up on the island, follow Antonia’s excursions at I Quit My Job and Moved to Guam.

Love you, Tonia!

A table of contents from the upcoming A cappella Zoo “Best of” issue is now available. Edited by Gina Ochsner, the stories in Bestiary are divided into the following sections: Aquarium, Phylum, Shelter, Topiary, Crematorium, Sacrarium, and Aviary. Can you guess in which category my story “Stain” appears? Check it out here.

Happy dance!

A preview of the cover art and illustrations has yet to be released; however, based on previous publications and this issue’s theme, I know the art will be amazing.

$9 a copy.
Print only.

I received some lovely news the other day: my flash fiction piece “Stain” has been selected by guest editor Gina Ochsner for inclusion in The Best of A cappella Zoo (Spring 2013). As they state on their webpage, this will be a print-only anthology, celebrating five years of A cappella Zoo, magical realism, slipstream, and flash fiction.

You can pre-order the issue for $9, which will be released early this spring. I’m extremely pleased, of course, to have been included in this special issue. And I found out right when I needed some good news. Even better, I learned that my coworker Robert Edward Sullivan will also have a story included in the anthology. Thank you, A cappella Zoo and Gina Ochsner!

Sorry — no cover to link to at the moment, but I’m sure the art for it will be amazing.

Life updates: Returning to work SOON. Nervous. Cautiously excited about going back, but also emotionally prepared (I hope) if my health gets in the way and everything crumbles around me. Ha.
